Simple Tips to Choose the Best Trends for Your Silhouette

Updated: May 21, 2021

Fall trends are easy to find on the internet and in fashion magazines but that doesn’t make it easier for you to tell which ones flatter your silhouette.

That’s why I’m sharing some personal considerations on the most popular trends right now so that you can make more informed choices when you start building your fall and winter outfits.

Bonus? Outfit ideas to inspire you!

This article is divided into five sections:

  1. Lines and shapes

  2. Fabrics

  3. Colors, patterns and trimmings

  4. Footwear and accessories

  5. Outfit ideas

Lines and shapes

  1. Oversized sweaters

  2. Cardigans

  3. Flowing dresses

  4. Padded jackets

  5. Statement shoulders

  6. Parkas

  7. Capes

  8. Utility wear

  9. Layering

1. Oversized sweaters

Wear them if you are tall or if you want to add volume to the upper body in the case of a triangle silhouette. On the contrary, I recommend you to avoid them if your shoulders and bust are larger than your hips. In case you love them, even though you know they are not the most flattering garments for your body type, mix them with a pleated skirt or boot cut or flared pants.

2. Cardigans

If your body lacks curves, make sure the one you choose is not made in an extremely soft fabric. You might also want to consider length if you are petite. If you have a circle body shape, trapeze cardigans that cover the waist and don’t drop more than mid-thigh are exactly what you need.

3. Flowing dresses

Romantic and feminine, they are one of the best choices for you, in case you are looking for a soft lightweight garment to follow the lines of your hourglass or pear-shaped silhouette.

4. Padded jackets

Choose the right length and enjoy their softness and warmth this winter. One in a vibrant color can boost your mood in a blink of an eye.

5. Statement shoulders

They look good on you if you have narrow shoulders or a rectangle silhouette. Avoid adding more volume to the same area in case your bust is wider than your hips, since it would accentuate the imbalance between the upper and lower body.

6. Parkas

Extremely practical, you can wear them in a fresh dynamic look, especially if you have a circle or a triangle body shape.

7. Capes

Elegant and sophisticated, capes are great if you want to stay warm and look classy at the same time. Choose one with an asymmetric hemline for circle and hourglass body shapes. If your goal is to add more volume to or to create curved lines on the upper body, capes with large patterns or prints and thick fabrics should be your go-to overcoats.

8. Utility wear

Cargo pants and boiler suits with big flap pockets look great on tall and lean silhouettes. On the contrary, I suggest you to avoid them if you are short or have a curvy silhouette.

9. Layering

It’s an easy way to add volume while looking more put together. Wear multiple layers if you have a straight rectangle body shape.

Fabrics

  1. Velvet

  2. Lace

  3. Corduroy

  4. Knitwear

  5. Tweed

  6. Leather

  7. Faux fur and sheepskin

1. Velvet

Thick and soft, you can use it in outfits suitable for any time of the day. Its use is not limited to evening or formal looks anymore and it is perfect for the cold season.

2. Lace

Like velvet, this fabric is not considered inappropriate for daytime outfits anymore. Together with sheer and shiny textures, it’s a valid option for posh holiday looks.

3. Corduroy

Thick and durable, this fabric is one of the most appropriate to wear in autumn and winter. Just keep in mind that it enlarges your silhouette.

4. Knitwear

Considering the wide range of options available in stores this season, you can easily find a knit garment to fit and flatter your silhouette. Look for the right length and make sure it’s not too bulky.

5. Tweed

Not only in black and white, but also with colourful patterns, this fabric is fashionable and practical. While classic black-and-white herringbone and houndstooth patterns are usually found on overcoats, colourful checked and glen tweed patterns also decorate blazers this season.

6. Leather

Black leather can take an all-black look to the next level and create contrast in other color combinations. Black leather mini dresses are getting a lot of attention this season. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing such a dress, you can try a black leather skirt or leather pants.

7. Faux fur and shearling

Be it in neutral shades or bright colours, faux fur is back. There’s no need to mention that it adds a lot of volume to your silhouette, so you have to carefully consider if and how to use it in your looks.

Colours, patterns and trimmings

  1. Metallic colours as neutrals and the hologram effect

  2. Bright gemstone colours

  3. Fluo colours

  4. Black and charcoal

  5. Animal print

  6. Checks

  7. Flowers

  8. Fringes

  9. Couture frills

  10. Tuxedo pants

1. Metallic colours as neutrals and the hologram effect

They are bold and eye-catching. If you decide to give them a try, there is one thing you should know: shiny fabrics reflect light and increase your body size. Choose silver for a cool skin undertone and warm golden shades for a warm skin undertone.

2. Bright gemstone colours

Use rich colours recalling gemstones like sapphire, amethyst, ruby, amber and emerald for an elegant color combo. Avoid placing them close to your face if such saturated shades are not the best colours for your seasonal type.

3. Fluo colours

They are huge this season. Wear them if you want to turn heads. You can play it safe with a flattering shade of yellow.

4. Black and charcoal

All-black looks and the classic black and white combination are elegant and look good on everyone. Think of proportions and areas of your body you intend to draw the attention away from when you choose to wear black.

5. Animal print

This season is the best time for you to get wild and creative. From the neutral leopard and zebra prints to snakeskin prints in bold colors like red, blue, green and yellow, there are many options for you to choose from.

6. Checks

Windowpane and tartan have conquered everyone’s hearts this season. You can wear them on blazers and overcoats, but also on skirts and other garments. Opt for checked leggings or tights if you want to stand out and show off your legs.

7. Flowers

Pair a long-sleeved dress in chiffon or Georgette with bold floral prints in fall-leaves-inspired autumn tones with ankle or over-the-knee boots for an effortlessly feminine fall look.

8. Fringes

Wear garments decorated with fringes to create movement and to embellish your look. From simple fringed hemlines and tassel fringes in leather to the more extravagant beaded fringes, playing with lengths has never been easier. If you’re into neat designs in terms of clothing, focus on accessories. A fringed soft scarf or a fringe-decorated bag might be just the unexpected twist you were looking for.

9. Couture frills

They are an exquisite choice for an elegant look and, since winter holidays are coming, why not taking them into consideration for an elegant Christmas or New Year’s Eve party outfit?! Place them on areas you intend to draw the attention to.

10. Tuxedo pants

Choose solid-colour pants with graphic details on the sides if you want to elongate your silhouette or opt for all-over graphic prints if you want to draw the attention towards the lower body.

Footwear and accessories

In terms of footwear, ankle boots with interesting details like artsy heels can turn an otherwise plain outfit into a work of art. If you don’t usually wear high-heeled shoes, you can opt for more comfortable ones, like pointed-toe flats, lace-up working boots and sock boots in soft fabrics like velvet. However, there’s no doubt that Texan boots are the hottest trend this season.

Speaking of accessories, head wraps are both fashionable and practical, since they protect you from the low temperatures outside. In terms of jewelry, wear sparkling statement earrings like a pair of chandeliers for a posh touch. This season, it’s all or nothing: either that or minimal necklaces and bracelets.

Outfit ideas

If you haven’t decided yet, some outfit ideas might make things easier for you.

Here are my suggestions:

I created two fashionable daytime looks sharing the same minimal necklace, quilted bag and matching wallet. I explored the animal print theme in different shades of red. While the one on the left is more appropriate for a triangle silhouette, the other one is more flattering for an hourglass body type. Which one would you choose?

On the other hand, I focused on metallic colours for the evening look. A simple long slip dress is perfect for a special event. In this case, the accessories add colour and glamour to the outfit and a soft natural make-up highlights the natural beauty, so that the woman wearing it can stand out and glow in a refined manner.
