How to Choose the Right Swimwear for Your Silhouette + Bonus: What to Pack in Your Beach Bag

Updated: May 21, 2021

Has it ever happened to you to wait impatiently for summer to come and, as soon as it got warmer, to get anxious? Maybe you felt a desperate need to get in shape fast and maybe similar thoughts often come back. But what if I told you that there is nothing wrong with your body? Have you tried looking for the right swimwear for your silhouette?

Keep reading if you are looking for some tips to help you spot the swimsuit that will flatter your body:

  1. Circle body type

  2. Hourglass body type

  3. Rectangle body type

  4. Inverted triangle body type

  5. Triangle body type

  6. Useful products to bring with you to the beach

1. Circle body type

The fastest and easiest solution for a full bust, waist and upper back is a solid-colour one-piece swimsuit.

In case you prefer two-piece swimsuits, a halter bikini top with structured cups will give you all the necessary support. Besides support, a bikini top in dark colours will help you visually reduce your bust. As for the bottoms, opt for a cut that will help you balance your silhouette. Try printed regular or low-waist shorts.

For this body type, I recommend you to stay away from horizontal stripes and thin straps.

2. Hourglass body type

In the case of a perfectly balanced silhouette, with the bust as wide as the hips and a narrow waist, the only risk consists in ruining the already existing balance.

Choose a halter bikini top or a crop top and bottoms with thick straps. It doesn’t matter whether you opt for solid-color or printed bottoms as long as you make sure that they always match the bikini top.

On the contrary, you should avoid wearing solid-colour bikini tops with printed bottoms or vice versa. What is more, bottoms with thin straps and low-waist shorts could alter the harmony of your silhouette.

3. Rectangle body type

With a rather straight silhouette, you can enjoy all the benefits of a monokini.

If you dream of a uniform tan all around your body and prefer two-pieces swimwear, opt for embellished triangle bikinis. Any decorative elements such as prints, ruffles, beads or fringes will do, as long as you like them and they add volume. Considering its curved lines, a twisted or sweetheart neckline band could also help in this case. Speaking of bottoms, choose low-waist briefs or shorts.

Stay away from plain strapless bandeau bikini tops.

4. Inverted triangle body type

In order to balance a larger upper body with the bust broader than the hips, wear a V-neck or a one-shoulder bikini top. For the same reason, I suggest you to focus on bottoms embellished with ruffles, bows or other trimmings.

You should avoid extremely thin straps that would only make your bust look broader than it actually is.

5. Triangle body type

Unlike in the case of an inverted triangle silhouette, your goal is to add volume to the bust. All you need is a printed or an embellished bikini top.

Make sure you only keep the extra volume on the upper body by wearing the embellished bikini top with dark solid-colour bottoms that emphasize your natural waistline.

I suggest you to avoid low-waist bottoms and shorts with horizontal stripes.

6. Useful products to bring with you to the beach

Once you’re done with shopping for the swimsuit, don’t forget to also pack in your beach bag a high SPF lotion, a bottle of water to stay hydrated and a pair of sun-glasses or a hat to protect your eyes from the sun.

Also, remember to bring with you to the beach some of the things that usually bring you joy on a relaxing day:

  1. A hard-copy book or an e-book, if you are the type who prefers to spend time alone;

  2. Your favourite music;

  3. A board game, if you prefer to share fun moments with your friends;

  4. A waterproof bag for those things you’d rather keep with you, in case you’re planning to take a walk or spend more time in the water than on your towel;

  5. An inflatable mattress or other inflatable beach games.

This being said, I can only wish you to enjoy as many sunny days at the beach or by the pool as possible. Be safe, have fun and get the most out of this summer!
